Legendary singer, actress and dancer Lena Horne died on Sunday night (May 8) at the New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. She was 92 years old.

Lena Horne began her career in the entertainment business as a teenager at the age of 16 as a dancer at Harlem’s famed Cotton Club. Lena Horne worked the jazz club circuit before she moved on to movies with her major studio debut ‘Panama Hattie’ in 1942.

Legendary Lena Horne became the first black performer to be signed to a long-term contract by a major Hollywood studio and went on to achieve international fame as a singer. Horne has 22 film credits under her belt and has paved the way for African-American actresses such as Halle Berry and Dorothy Dandridge as well as musical starlets Diana Ross and Diahann Carroll.

National Congress of Black Women E. Faye Williams says that Lena Horne destroyed many of the stereotypes due to her dignified stage presence and made success as being a crossover entertainer before it was even widely used. Williams goes on to say that many have failed to fully acknowledge Lena Horne’s civil rights efforts in which she used her power to change the shape of racial discrimination in the United States

“The beauty and enjoyment that she brought to the masses with her entertainment will last far longer than many of the entertainers who followed her. She was a unique personality who will truly be missed,” said E. Faye Williams.

The cause of death is unknown at press time.
