Yesterday marked the passing of one of Hip hop’s most sampled and beloved forefathers. Jimmy Castor, saxophonist and leader of the seminal funk/disco group Jimmy Castor Bunch, passed away today at 64.
It is said that the legendary saxophonist passed away at 2:30 p.m. at the age of 64 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The causes of his death are currently unknown.
Castor’s music has been sampled by many of Hip Hop artists over the years, including Eric B. and Rakim, the Ultramagnetic MCs, N.W.A., Kanye West and others.
His song “It’s Just Begun” also became a staple break of ’70s and ’80s b-boy scene, even appearing as the backing track for the Rock Steady Crew in the film Flashdance.
HipHop RX sends its condolences to Castor’s family.
