Male singers still dominate the charts with a substantial number of the highest earning musicians in the world being solo male artists. Singers, in particular, have a way of speaking directly to us through their music. In 2017 there were some truly exceptional male singers topping the charts and delivering stunning live performances.
- Justin Beiber
Justin Beiber’s popularity has continued into 2017 with a series of collaborations such as his collaboration with Luis Fonzi and Daddy Yankee called Despacito and being featured on DJ Khaleed’s single “I’m the One” along with Lil’ Wayne and Chance the Rapper. In August he released the single “Friends”, working with songwriters he previously worked with for his single “Sorry”.
- Bruno Mars
Despite his enduring popularity, it has been a relatively quiet year for Bruno Mars. He released “That’s What it’s Like” in January of 2017 but aside from that it has been a year of touring, culminating in the announcement of a primetime concert Live at the Apollo. His 2017 tour 24K Magic World Tour, has been exceptionally popular and has really showcased his talent as a live performer.
Drake’s billboarding topping album More Life was released this year and holds the record for the most streamed album within 24 hours of release. He won 13 awards at the Billboard music awards continuing the incredible popularity and critical acclaim he has earned over the past 8 years. He released his single signs in June 2017.
- Zayn Malik
The former One Direction member has certainly established his name as a unique and successful solo artist, continuing his popularity in 2017. He released “Still got time” with Partynextdoor and collaborated with Sia to release “Dusk til’ dawn” in September. He has also made waves in the world of fashion, releasing a line of Italian footwear.
- Garth Brooks
Garth Brooks has been a name in country music for decades and in 2017 he has continued his run of popularity. He won entertainer of the year at the 51st Country Music Association Awards after his extensive U.S. tour. He is also releasing another anthology of his most recent releases and the lip sync scandal from the Country Music Association Awards seems to have done little to dampen his popularity.

Off the back of late 2016 announcement about his impending 2017 album release, there has been a lot of buzz about Sam Smith and the people he is collaborating with on this project. The British singer-songwriter finally released his much-anticipated album “The Thrill of it all” in November 2017. “The Thrill of it all” was Sam Smith’s first U.S. number one single despite his consistent success in the U.K charts.
- Ed Sheeran
British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has only gone from strength to strength in his career and 2017 proved to be yet another successful year for the 26-year-old. He began the year with an announcement regarding his upcoming album and a break from his 2016 social media hiatus. The new album “÷” topped charts all over the world and became his most successful album to date.
