The Hope for Haiti telethon has raised an amazing fifty-eight million dollars, and still, more donations from around the world are coming in.
According to a news release from telethon organizers, the 58 million is a record for donations made by the public through a disaster relief telethon. The preliminary figure of 58 million does not include donations from corporations or large private donors.
People will be able to make donations to ‘Hope for Haiti’ for the next six months via phone, text messaging, the web and regular mail. More than 100 actors/actresses and other celebrities were answering the phones in N.Y. and L.A. including Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro, Leonardo Dicaprio and others. Several of the celebrities conversations were aired live during the live broadcast on Friday.
Some of the Hope For Haiti performances for the evening included Rihanna, Jay-Z, Bruce Springsteen, Bono, Shakira, Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake and many more.
