American Music Awards: J-Lo Falls Butt First, Rihanna’s Naughty Outfit + Winners (Photos)

All the stars made their way to the red carpet for the 2009 American Music Awards and with this year’s 37th annual show came many surprises at the Los Angeles’ Nokia Theater. Produced by Larrry Klein and executive-produced by Orly Adelso, the lineup of music’s top artists were from a variety of genres. The focus of this year’s awards was honoring those in Pop/Rock, Country, Rap/Hip-Hop, Soul/R&B, Alternative, Adult Contemporary, Latin and Contemporary Inspirational.
R&B singer Toni Braxton who’s about to release an album came in tow with her young son Diezel as her date. Janet Jackson (who opened the show) performed a number of her songs and ended her performance with her new single “Make Me.” Brother Jermaine cheered her on from the crowd.
Rihanna, who appeared on the red carpet in a sexy dress, surprised many in her racy white bandage-like outfit during her live performance. Rihanna’s outfit barely covered her private parts and had spiked shoulder pads on it that shot lasers.
Singer and actress Jennifer Lopez aka J-Lo, unfortunately had a mishap as she attempted to launch herself from the back of her dancers after climbing up their backs as a staircase while performing her new song “Louboutins.” J-Lo launched herself approximately 5 feet into the air only to end up on her ass(ets). Lopez quickly recouped, got up and began finishing her routine of her live performance as if nothing even occurred. Kudos to J-Lo for the fast recovery.
Performances at the American Music Awards included Timbaland, Nelly Furtado and SoShy who performed “Morning After Dark,” Shakira in “Give It Up to Me,” Black Eyed Peas’ “Meet Me Halfway” and “Boom Boom Pow,” Jay-Z and Alicia Keys in “Empire State of Mind,” Eminem and 50 Cent performing “Crack a Bottle” and “Forever,” Lady Gaga in “Bad Romance” and “Speechless,” Mary J. Blige performance of “I Am,” Whitney Houston “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength,” Alicia Keys “Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart,” Kelly Clarkson “Already Gone,” Daughtry – “Life After You,” amongst others.
