Reportedly Spike Lee has said that Tyler Perry’s characters in the films ‘House of Payne’ and ‘Meet the Browns’ are “coonery” and “buffoonery”.

In a recent interview with Ed Gordon, Spike Lee Speaks on Tyler’s New Found Success:

“Each artist should be allowed to pursue their artistic endeavors, but I still think there is a lot of stuff out today that is coonery and buffoonery. I know it’s making a lot of money and breaking records, but we can do better. … I am a huge basketball fan, and when I watch the games on TNT, I see these two ads for these two shows (Tyler Perry’s “Meet the Browns” and “House of Payne”), and I am scratching my head. We got a black president, and we going back to Mantan Moreland and Sleep ‘n’ Eat?”

Tyler Perry shoots back in response to Lee’s criticism in an interview on 60 Minutes, which aired last night on CBS (10-25-09).

“That pisses me off. It is so insulting,” said Perry. “I would love to read that criticism to my fan base,” Perry told Byron Pitts, 60 Minutes Correspondent. “All these characters of mine are bait, bait to get people talking about God, love, family, and faith.”

interesting how spike short shit lee can become a hypocrite all of a sudden. i love his movies but he is the king of stereotype (do the right thing, school daze, etc. etc.) why single out tyler perry?? if that be the case then we should be dogging out every black rapper and athlete out there because that’s all “massa” trained us to do anyway right?? i do agree with singleton’s statement about black people entertaining the masses…
