President Barack Obama appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman and talked about whether or not he believes racism is behind recent political controversy surrounding him and his healthcare plan such as the South Carolina Republican politician Rep. Joe Wilson’s outburst shouting, “You lie!” during Obama’s speech about health care to Congress which was later deemed racist by some people. David Letterman asked Obama about all the racism controversy and allegations.

President Barack Obama discussed the issue while first making it clear that he was “… actually black before the election,” which his response drew hand-claps and laughs from The Late Show audience while Letterman jokingly asked “How long have you been a black man.”

In all seriousness, Obama detailed that whenever a “President tries to bring about significant changes… there is a certain segment of the population that gets very riled up,” so it is not “untypical” that in polictics for “people [to] yell at you.”

President Barack Obama adds though that the “overwhelming majority of people” are wanting to see some “integrity” and are “turned off” by the shouting and yelling and “expect more” from their elected officials.
