Recap of the ‘We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration,’ Plus Photos and Video
President-elect Barack Obama and wife Michelle Obama walked down the steps of Lincoln Memorial to a crowd of thousands for “We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration†on Sunday, January 18, 2009 marking the beginning of the Obama inauguration as the 44th President of The United States of America.
Obama did a speech addressing the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the economic crisis.
“In the course of our history, only a handful of generations have been asked to confront challenges as serious as the ones we face right now. Our nation is at war. Our economy is in crisis. The true character of our nation is revealed not during times of comfort and ease, but by the right we do when the moment is hard. I ask you to help me reveal that character once more, and together, we can carry forward as one nation, and one people, the legacy of our forefathers that we celebrate today,” Obama stated.
Thousands of supporters who came out also got a chance to hear performances from U2, Mary J. Blige, Stevie Wonder, Beyonce Knowles, Usher, John Legend, Shakira, will.i.am, Herbie Hancock, Garth Brooks, and others at the event. Guest appearances and speakers included Jack Black, Rosario Dawson, Jamie Foxx, Tom Hanks, Martin Luther King III, Queen Latifah, Denzel Washington, Forest Whitaker, Tiger Woods, Ashley Judd, George Lopez, plus more.
