Umbrella Song Was Too Mainstream For Mary J. Blige

Mary J. Blige
According to reports, Mary J. Blige stated the song Umbrella was first offered to her, but was too mainstream.

“I’m not going to chase what [mainstream] fans like,””It might work for a Mariah. It might work for a Beyonce. But Mary J. Blige is looked at as some sort of organic thing.”

However, according to our insider, the writers first wrote the song for Britney Spears for her comeback album and someone thought it should be sung by someone urban because of the line “Ella ella eh eh eh” and Rihanna’s name came up and that’s the end result.

This kind of reminds you of “Monster’s Ball” after Halle Berry won an Academy Award for Best Actress and Angela Bassett spoke about how it was first offered to her. Sounds like second thoughts.
